As I was growing up, my parents did me the beautiful favor of providing music lessons and choir opportunities. I don’t remember ever being super passionate about listening to music or learning my songs. In fact, I can remember about four songs that I was excited to learn over the course of twelve years of music lessons! It wasn’t until I was in my Junior year of high school that I realized the strong purpose within music.
The purpose of music, I believe, is the purpose of everything in creation- to glorify God and bring us into union with Him and each other. But even among everything in the created order, music is unique in its ability to unite our hearts and express our fulness!
Can you remember a moment when a song eased your anxious mind or soothed your soul? Music can unite you with strangers at a concert or within a congregation. Joy you could not muster broke through – at the call of a song! We all know the power of music to heal, calm, build and unite just as much as we can admit its power to hurt, agitate, defile, and divide.
I long to reflect to God and His world the praise and love only warranted by our Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer. I believe the proper pursuit of music is key to both influencing and expressing the heart and life. There are many who proclaim to know God but their music and/or lives deny Him. Through prayer and consecrating our lives – music and all!- to God, we can let His glory shine like the sun in all its strength and life!
Jesus prayed for us in John 17, “I have given them the glory that You gave me, that they may be one as we are one- I in them and You in Me- so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as You have loved me.”
